Emily McDowell is Hilarious March 23, 2015 00:15
I discovered Emily McDowell's line of greeting cards a month ago on Etsy. Her Look at My Phone Card was featured and I immediately bought it to give to my husband for Valentine's Day. We don't really celebrate Valentine's Day, but this card was just too perfect to pass up.
This is somewhat ironic, because a totally awkward but hilarious Valentine's Day card was actually what launched Emily's business in 2013. Emily is a former ad agency art/creative director. In 2011, she left the advertising world to focus on creating things that weren't ads - mainly illustrations and stories.
By January of 2013, she had resurrected an old dream of having a greeting card line, by printing a test run of 100 copies of a Valentine's Day card for "when you're kind of together but it's not a big deal."
The card went viral and she sold 1,600 copies. By May of 2013, she had a full line of 45 cards and presented it to the world at the National Stationery Show.
I share the story of how Emily got started, because I like that she took a leap of faith (or several) to do something she loved. She is a living, breathing version of the modern American dream, and stories like hers are what inspired me to open Wander.
Her cards are also crazy funny. I want to give them to everyone I know.
She says, "My work reflects our shared human experience, in all its different, messy forms, and I feel most satisfied when something I made helps somebody feel like someone else out there gets them."
She also finds it, "creepily satisfying whenever a customer asks if we've been reading their diary, because it means we're doing something right."
Emily McDowell cards are designed and printed in California. We've got a great selection of birthday, wedding and general congrats/thank you/housewarming cards in stock now. New cards for Mother's Day, Father's Day and graduations are coming soon.
